Our last full day today before the drive south back to San Francisco and our flight home. After a late in room breakfast we decided to take drive through the valley to Sonoma, I wanted to visit Jack London State park up at Glen Ellen. Helen had a desire to visit Walmart, so we found one en-route first, then took a very scenic 16 mile drive to the park. I have enjoyed some of the Jack London books over the years, as well as the popular White Fang and Call of the Wild, the Sea Wolf, the Road and Martin Eden are such a good read. Jack was a great adventurer, and writes about his homeland in the San Francisco Bay Area too, amazing how much he crammed into his short life, the park was well worth the visit.
Later in the afternoon, much to Helen's amusement as I tried to cool down after my hike around the park, it was her chance for a little retail therapy as we spotted an out of town mall just outside Napa. All the usual designer brands here of course, a chance for me to top up on a few Ralph Lauren shirts (they fit so well), and Helen? Well, no luck this time, nothing of interest but it seems a shopping activity does make her happy as we come to the end of our wonderful three week adventure.
We found a great little Tapas restaurant in the heart of Napa by the river to end our day with great food and a chance to sample some of the blended wines.
The ruins of Wolf House. Sadly a few days after his dream house was completed the linseed oil used to polish the floors combusted and the whole place burned down. Jack died soon after from kidney failure in his forties due to mercury poisoning as a treatement for other ailments while aboard one of the many ship adventures he undertook.
Around and about Sonoma.
A visit to the 'House of Walmart' - a trip to the states is never complete without one. She even snuck one in while in Winslow too 😄
